Our Story

GearFish Guide started in 2021 on the back deck of our caravan in Burleigh Heads, Queensland — with one rod, a laptop, and a stubborn belief that fishing advice in Australia didn't need to be so blokey, so jargon-heavy, or so young.

We're Ron and Margaret Callahan, retired teachers and lifelong anglers. After Ron's arthritis made his old heavy surf rod a chore rather than a joy, we spent a year testing dozens of rods, reels and lures to find gear that was genuinely comfortable for senior hands, wrists and backs. Friends wanted our list. Then friends of friends. Then a website seemed easier than photocopies.

Today GearFish Guide is a small family business: we test every product we sell, write every guide ourselves, and pack every order from our Gold Coast warehouse. Our kids think we've lost the plot. Our grandkids think we have the best job in the world. They're both right.
